Southern Manufacturing returns

Published:  18 January, 2019

For anyone involved in works management, Southern Manufacturing offers a wide range of relevant products and services, from health & safety solutions, through all kinds of production hardware to management software and consumables.

The show has also formalised links with a number of important industry organisations, which includes Composites UK, the Confederation of British Metal forming, Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, The British Gear Association, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Gauge and Toolmakers Association. The partnerships will enable the roll-out of brand new show features and the feed-in of new technical expertise to the show’s free technical seminar programme. Examples this year include a mini-masterclass on Total Productive Maintenance and TPM 4.0, looking at how to align TPM with current CI strategies, how to select the right tools and techniques and an insight into some of the pitfalls to avoid.

Exhibitors

Filtermist International returns to Southern Manufacturing after a gap of a number of years, highlighting the role it plays in helping to ensure British workers ‘Go Home Healthy’ – the latest workplace safety campaign from the HSE. Filtermist, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, offers a range of products and services designed to minimise exposure to oil mist and other airborne contaminants. CoSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations require most LEV system to be tested at least once every 14 months by a competent person. LEV engineers will demonstrate Filtermist’s digital reporting system, which makes it easy to file and then retrieve LEV test reports when required.

While BCAS will be highlighting what can be done to reduce energy waste in compressed air. The organisation says that as little as 8-10% of the total energy supplied to a compressor is converted into useful energy that can do work at the point of use. Reducing energy waste in compressed air is therefore vital to the efficiency of a manufacturing process, to saving costs and to prolonging the life of equipment. BCAS will be demonstrating some of the key measures that can be put in place to improve the energy efficiency of compressed air systems, from system design and maintenance, to data logging and air leak detection audits.

Long-standing exhibitor igus UK returns with latest addition to its automation offering, the drylin delta robot - a cost-effective alternative to similar robots available on the market. Based on standard igus components, the drylin delta robot is capable of typically generating a ROI within six months, according to the firm. The robot is based on three maintenance-free drylin ZLW toothed belt axes, lubrication-free igubal link rods and matching adapter plates. NEMA stepper motors and encoders ensure fast handling of up to 1.0kg with a precision of ±0.5mm.

New exhibitors taking part in 2019 include Kent-based Instrutec Controls, a specialist engineering service provider specialising in PLC & SCADA software development, control panel manufacturing, process and electrical system design, including for ATEX applications. Oemeta UK highlights new products, including Hycut two-component coolant and high performance ester-based products, oil separators and HSE Metalworking 5-compliant boron and formaldehyde-free metalworking fluids. The 2019 exhibition has also seen an interesting 26% boost in non UK-based exhibitors, giving visitors the chance to meet many firms they wouldn’t normally expect to encounter.

Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 solutions on show at Southern Manufacturing 2019 include Harmonic Software Systems’ new Hypervisor reference platform for safety critical systems, combining the power of a Windows or Linux platform, with the safety and security of a VxWorks real time operating system. The focus on Heidenhain's stand at Southern Manufacturing 2019 will be the company's Industry 4.0-compatible StateMonitor software. Running on a PC, tablet or other mobile device, its enables users to capture, visualise and evaluate the status of connected machine tools and the current jobs being run. Results can be displayed on any terminal over a network or any networked mobile device, thereby enabling operators to remote monitor operations whilst performing other tasks.
