Theatres of knowledge!
Published:  01 April, 2014

PWE takes a look at this year’s range of seminars at this years Plant and Asset Management, Air-Tech, Drives & Controls, together with the Fluid Power & Systems and the inaugural European Offshore & Energy exhibition (NEC, Birmingham, Halls 3 and 3A, 8-10 April 2014).

With only days to go until the Plant and Asset Management, Air-Tech, Drives & Controls, together with the Fluid Power & Systems and the inaugural European Offshore & Energy exhibition (NEC, Birmingham, Halls 3 and 3A, 8-10 April 2014), show organiser, DFA Media, says it will be staging its biggest FREE seminar and conference programme to date.

The free-to-attend seminar programmes at the will consist of four seminar theatres located in halls 3 and 3a; the ‘Maintenance Seminar Theatre’, ‘The Drives Seminar Theatre’, ‘The Fluid and Air Seminar Theatre’ and the ‘EnergyDialogue Conference’.

There will be almost 80 seminars helping you find practical solutions and inside knowledge, whatever the needs of your business. The programme will consist of regular 30 minute presentations from leading organisations including HSE, GAMBICA, BFPA, BCAS, The Institution of Plant Engineers, Cranfield University, UKTI, CCSA, Renewable Energy Association, Oil and Gas UK and a host of world class companies such as EDF Energy, JCB, Shell, Pilz Automation, SKF, Weg Motors, and Schneider Electric to name a few.

Maintenance Seminar Theatre

Among the many informative papers being presented at this year’s Maintenance Theatre located in the Plant & Asset Management Exhibition will be: Total productive maintenance (TPM) in a changing world, by Paul Hardiman of Industry Forum; Testing HV switchgear & cables – partial discharge detection techniques, by Carl Eastham of IPEC; Redundant assets – to decommission or not to decommission, by Richard Vann of RVA Group; Avoiding vibration induced fatigue failure in process pipework, by Neil Parkinson of AV Technology; Managing the condition and energy efficiency of your plant assets, by Shane Golaup of Infor; Reduce maintenance costs and improve equipment reliability with IR windows, by Martin Robinson of IRISS; and Estimating the real value of enterprise asset management, by Andrew Carrie of SRO Solutions.

Plant & Asset Management Exhibition is the UK’s leading exhibition for plant, works and maintenance engineers. The free-to-attend show covers the very latest in condition monitoring, health & safety, training, CMMS, energy efficiency, handling & storage, plus much more.

The event is supported by the IPlantE, the plant engineering professional sector of SOE (the society Operations Engineers), Cranfield University, The Institution of Diagnostic Engineers, UKTA, BCAS, and the Institute of Asset Management.

Early registration is recommended.

Fluid Power & Air Seminar Theatre

Some of the many valuable papers being presented at this year’s Fluid Power & Air Seminar Theatre will include: Meeting the Changing Requirements of Fluid Power Equipment in Earthmoving Machinery – a JCB Perspective, by Harish Narotham of JCB Research; Business as usual (how not to run a compressed air system), by Greg Bordiak of the British Compressed Air Society (BCAS); Pressure integrity of screwed and socketed pipework systems, by TATA; and Why you should use Genuine Manufacturer Spare Parts, by Chris Dee of BCAS. The Air-Tech and Fluid Power & Systems seminars are sponsored by Gardner Denver.

European Offshore & Energy conference

As well as the extensive range of offerings to be showcased at European Offshore & Energy, which brings the entire upstream energy marketplace – exploration, production and energy generation – together under one roof, the event will also feature EnergyDialogue, a three-day conference covering a host of energy issues together with product/solution analysis and debate. EnergyDialogue will ensure delegates receive all the information they need directly from leading authorities, policy makers and expert practitioners.

Conference topics include a review of Sir Ian Wood’s recently published interim report (The Wood Report) revealing the economic and energy security opportunities still available from the UK’s offshore oil and gas resources.

In addition Ray MacSweeney, Ernst & Young will examine the supply chain implications of the Report. Clive Evans, Deepwater EU, will discuss an innovative solution for the prevention of crevice corrosion at pipe supports. While Dr John Constable,
Renewable Energy Foundation, will debate the costs and future of offshore renewables
.

Other highlights include a discussion on safety in the wind energy sector by Steve Green of Safety Technology; Opportunities in the supply chain for marine renewables
by Stephanie Merry, Renewable Energy Association; Unconventional Gas by Nick Grealy, NoHotAir; The future for CCS and its relevance in the EU offshore context by
Jeff Chapman, Carbon Capture & Storage Association; “Rise of the Machines” – Predictive and Event Driven Analytics in Energy by Jonathan Guthrie, TIBCO Software, and the Impact of electricity market reform and investor issues in the offshore sector by Simon Monk, IPA Economics.

Motor Driven Conference (MDS)

Another major addition at this year’s co-location of events in halls 3 and 3a, will be the staging of the Motor Driven Conference (MDS) in the Drives Seminar Theatre. MDS is focused on helping industry professionals to generate major savings from motor driven apparatus – such as pumps, fans and compressors – by applying a systems engineering approach to reduce energy, improve performance and ultimately save money.

UK Trade & Investment to have major presence

UKTI will also feature prominently in the conference and seminar programmes across all the events staged by DFA Media in Halls 3 and 3a.

UKTI will highlight many of the areas it is currently working and the levels of success it is currently achieving for UK businesses.

Jim Feeney, head of UKTI’s Advanced Manufacturing Events, commented on the Government Department’s decision to exhibit and speak at the events: “When event organiser DFA Media approached me to consider whether I should add this event to the portfolio of events in the UK and Internationally where UKTI seek to provide a platform for international business to be done and export contracts to be won, I was immediately interested.

“The initial approach was based on UKTI’s role in the oil & gas sector; a sector where we have a significant profile – and a successful role – in supporting British business from the major oil companies like Shell and BP down through each tier of the supply chain to SMEs. However my colleagues and I saw this wide-ranging engineering event as offering an opportunity broader than just oil & gas where we already have a very strong and responsive customer base.”

Feeney continued: “We felt this event offered the opportunity to reach businesses which were not yet exporting and introduce them to UKTI and engage with existing exporters and introduce them to new markets. We plan to do both at the event. We will seek to highlight the work UKTI does locally, nationally and internationally and to introduce and explain the product range of support available through government networks and the business partners with whom we regularly operate.

“We will put together a strong presence at the show with the intention of assisting more companies to explore exporting for the first time, or to consider new markets, or to identify potential new customers in existing export markets with our team on site during the event. We will be able to provide details of our programme of activities across all sectors through 2014-15 and beyond and will be able to explain how and where UKTI support can fit the needs of individual companies. I am looking forward to it.”

Co-location

The seminar and conference programme is part of DFA Media’s established biennial shows; Drives & Controls, Plant & Asset Management, Air-Tech, together with Fluid Power & Systems, and European Offshore & Energy. These complementary events are themselves co-located alongside MACH and National Electronics Week, creating the UK’s biggest engineering event in 2014, and is expected to attract over 40,000 delegates.

Don’t miss out on being a part of the UK’s largest co-located industry event. To register for these must-attend shows and seminars, please visit:
