CPI, a driving force behind the North East’s knowledge economy, marked its 20th anniversary with a special event at Westminster, hosted by Redcar MP Anna Turley. The event celebrated CPI’s two decades of impact in supporting regional businesses, strengthening supply chains, and enabling economic growth across the UK—while highlighting its vital role in positioning the North East as a hub for industrial innovation.
Since its formation in 2004 at The Wilton Centre in Redcar, CPI has helped to unlock over £3 billion in private investment, supported over 1,300 businesses bring cutting-edge innovations to market, and created high-value jobs in the North East and beyond.
Over its 20 years, its expansion across the North East has created world-class facilities in Wilton, Darlington, and Sedgefield, which have made the region a powerhouse for innovation in life sciences, advanced manufacturing, and clean technology. This breadth of expertise across the innovation landscape has helped numerous local SMEs including Pragmatic Semiconductor and Calysta scale, enabling the region to compete on a global stage.
Speaking at the event, Anna Turley MP recognised CPI’s impact on the region’s economy and industrial landscape: “CPI has a huge role to play when it comes to making Britain a clean energy superpower, our commitment to hitting net zero by 2030, and building an industrial strategy that has deep roots in local communities.
“CPI holds the key to achieving so much of this government's ambition—driving growth, pushing technological innovation, and building a future where world-class science and industry transform communities like mine in Redcar."
Frank Millar, CEO of CPI, added: “The North East has always been at the heart of CPI’s work, and we remain focused on ensuring that regional innovation fuels national success. By helping businesses scale, strengthening supply chains, and creating high-value jobs, we are building a more resilient and competitive economy.”
By continuing to bridge the gap between research and industry, CPI ensures that the North East has the funding, expertise, and infrastructure needed for businesses to succeed. Its work is not only driving regional growth but also strengthening the UK’s position as a global leader in deep tech and advanced manufacturing.
