SPS 2024: Driving Innovation and Collaboration in Automation

Published:  27 September, 2024

The 33rd edition of SPS – Smart Production Solutions, the flagship event in the automation industry, will take place in Nuremberg from 12 to 14 November 2024. SPS brings together innovators, key industry players, and newcomers to showcase cutting-edge solutions in industrial automation. With a history spanning more than three decades, the event has established itself as a global platform for technological advancement and international collaboration.

In 2023, the SPS exhibition attracted over 500 visitors from the UK, a significant number considering the 50,000-strong international attendance. A similar turnout from the UK is expected this year as businesses and professionals look to explore the latest trends in automation. In total, around 1,200 companies will participate, presenting a broad spectrum of automation products, systems, and innovations. Spread across 16 exhibition halls and covering 125,000 sqm, the event promises to be a showcase of cutting-edge technology and ideas shaping the future of smart production.

Renowned UK-based firms such as ALLTORQ LTD, Eaton Electrical Systems Ltd, Fortress Interlocks Ltd, and Trio Motion Technology Limited will be among the many exhibitors representing the nation's automation sector. Alongside these established companies, SPS also serves as a vital platform for start-ups and first-time exhibitors, providing them with an opportunity to present their innovations to an international audience.

Key themes and technological trends

A hallmark of the SPS event is its focus on showcasing the latest industry trends and technological advancements. Across four forums, located in Halls 1, 3, 6, and 8, visitors can expect expert presentations, panel discussions, and live demonstrations that cover a wide range of topics. Hall 3 will host the "Technology Stage," a major forum presented by the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Association (VDMA) and the German Electro and Digital Industry Association (ZVEI). This forum will be broadcast live via the digital platform “SPS on air,” ensuring global access for those unable to attend in person. Sessions will be available in both German and English, further supporting the international appeal of the event.

The main topics for SPS 2024 will include:

- Digital transformation in manufacturing
- Industrial communication systems
- Safety and security in automation
- Data-driven and intelligent control and visualisation concepts
- Innovations in sensor technology
- Advances in drives and automation
- Sustainability in industrial processes
- The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in automation

These themes reflect the growing importance of data, AI, and sustainability within the industrial automation landscape. By focusing on these areas, SPS 2024 aims to provide insight into the future direction of the industry and foster discussions that drive innovation.

Special exhibitions and joint stands

In addition to individual exhibitors, SPS 2024 will feature several joint stands that have become key attractions over the years. The "Automation meets IT" joint stand in Hall 6, which will feature around 20 exhibitors, offers a deep dive into the integration of IT solutions within manufacturing. Visitors will be able to explore topics such as IT management, cloud and edge-based solutions, IoT and AI-driven innovations, as well as security measures for smart manufacturing environments. This stand provides a valuable opportunity for attendees to receive personalised advice from industry experts and explore comprehensive IT solutions tailored to manufacturing needs.

Hall 8 will be home to the “young INNOVATORS” stand, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, which will spotlight up-and-coming German companies. This space is dedicated to fostering young talent and offering a platform for these innovative firms to share their products, services, and technological advancements. Additionally, the “Start-up Area” in the same hall will feature companies from around the world, showcasing novel solutions from the next generation of automation industry leaders. These areas are expected to be a focal point for attendees seeking fresh perspectives and the latest innovations in smart production.

Expanding the SPS community

SPS is more than just an annual trade show. Throughout the year, the event serves as a dynamic hub for professional networking and knowledge exchange within the automation community. The "SPS Insights" section of the event's website provides regular updates on industry trends, while the "Industry News" feature offers insights into the latest developments in the field. These resources support the ongoing exchange of information and ideas that is essential for driving technological growth and innovation.

For professionals looking to advance their careers, the "SPS CareerDrive" portal offers a dedicated platform for job seekers and employers within the automation industry. This service allows individuals to explore new career paths, while companies can strategically position themselves to attract top talent. With these year-round initiatives, SPS continues to support the growth and development of the automation sector, far beyond the three-day event in November.

Looking ahead to SPS 2024

As the automation industry continues to evolve, SPS remains a crucial meeting point for businesses, professionals, and innovators alike. With its diverse exhibition program, in-depth presentations, and opportunities for networking, SPS 2024 promises to be an essential event for anyone involved in smart production. Visitors can look forward to discovering the latest trends, exploring new technologies, and engaging with industry leaders from around the world.
