2022 Europe Protection Innovation Award Winners announced

Published:  21 February, 2023

DuPont Personal Protection has announced the winners of its Protection Innovation Award (formerly Kevlar Innovation Award) for the European region.

The award recognises innovative personal protective solutions through the use of Kevlar and/or Nomex fibres in the form of gloves or sleeves, helping offer hand and arm protection to industrial workers around the world.

“With innovative applications of Kevlar and Nomex, this year we received submissions from our European brand licensees showcasing gloves and sleeves with really unique performance across a broad range of industries.” said Joel DeNardis, global marketing leader, Kevlar Industrials. “By using Kevlar and Nomex fibres in their latest innovations, our licensees are able to deliver enhanced levels of multi-hazard protection. In such a dynamic market where demands by wearers continue to evolve, our licensees have been able to push the boundaries of what is possible in terms of protection, comfort, and dexterity. At DuPont we are proud to work with partners who care about the quality and performance of their innovative products and continually deliver wearable technology.”

This year’s submissions included brand licensees’ gloves that use Kevlar and/or Nomex fibre in their construction and challenge the traditional applications for mechanical and thermal protection. All submissions were evaluated based on innovation in product design and use of Kevlar and/or Nomex to enhance protection benefits, an ability to meet customers’ unmet protection needs and the potential to capitalise on market opportunities. This year’s winners are:

• SEIZ Fire-Fighter AS BG Glove 1564420-FF-AA-BG Glove

This new product is designed to deal with the most rigorous and dangerous applications faced by today’s fire-fighters. It has a  combination of Nomex and Kevlar materials to provide outstanding levels of protection and comfort.

The palm material is engineered with a double face Nomex and Kevlar knit with a silicone carbon coating offering abrasion resistance and grip. The knuckles are protected using Nomex with Seiz heat absorber and the wrist area is enhanced using a Kevlar knitted cuff with pulse protection. A Kevlar liner with PTFE membrane offers premium cut resistance (Level E according to EN 388). In addition, the glove conforms to EN 659, performance requirements for firefighter gloves, and offers EN 407 Level 4 for burning resistance.

• Furygan Heat X Kevlar 4550-1 Glove with Integrated Thermal Heating System

Equipped with an innovative heating system, developed in collaboration with Kevlar engineers and Kevlar fibre, the latest Furygan heated gloves offer a new experience for motorcyclists. At the core of the glove, the Kevlar fibre captures and spreads heat throughout the entire surface of the glove with a touch of carbon present in the weave as a smart conductor. This energy is captured in a glove made of leather and softshell material, designed to retain heat as close as possible to the skin, delaying humidity and protecting the hands in case of a hard blow. Three-layer laminated material provides water repellency and is impermeable to wind and water, without compromising on comfort. The back of the hand and palm offer extra protection to meet the demands of cold weather driving without affecting dexterity.

• JS Gloves ROKXB Knitted Safety Glove

This glove made with Kevlar engineered yarn offers an excellent balance of contact heat protection (Level 2 according to EN407 at 250° C) and the highest cut level (Level F according to EN388) while delivering enhanced comfort and dexterity. Its outer shell is constructed with a new innovative yarn from the Kevlar engineered yarns portfolio, enabling reliable and affordable mechanical and contact heat protection, combined with a 100% natural cotton liner. The glove is also offered in an extended cuff version (ROKXB-10) for applications requiring extended wrist and arm protection.

It can give improved user comfort without the risk of skin irritations even after long-term use at increased temperatures given its breathability and seamless design.

DuPont Kevlar fibre –with its durability, low weight and extraordinary strength– is used to make a variety of garments, accessories and equipment that provides both mechanical protection and contact heat resistance.

On the other hand, the proven performance of DuPont Nomex fiber helps deliver protection against multiple thermal hazards -like flash fire and arc flash- allowing the user to face any job with confidence.

For over 50 years, DuPont says it has continuously taken on new challenges, with its technical staff driving innovation and working on a range of new opportunities through collaborations with communities, industrial manufacturers and governments. The company says it continues to deliver the performance of Kevlar and Nomex to those who need reliable PPE solutions.
