Published: 05 June, 2014
Safety & Health Expo, the largest UK based safety exhibition will be held at ExCeL London from 17-19 June. Visitors to health and safety’s flagship national exhibition will find a high quality speaker programme and the very latest in innovative, market-defining products. PWE reports.
As the UK’s leading national show for health and safety, the exhibition includes everything from training and consultancy providers to behavioural safety, drug and alcohol awareness, information services, publications, legal firms, as well as PPE suppliers. There will also be innovations from further afield with a fifth of exhibitors coming from overseas, highlighting the important role the UK market represents internationally.
With over 320 exhibitors, the exhibition is 30% bigger than last year. Heather Beach, brand director for OSH Global, said: “For a few years now, the show has stayed the same size in Birmingham and it desperately needed a new lease of life. We are delighted to see that companies are investing in the move to London with a significant increase in participation.”
One of the key new features for the event is the innovation trail, which is an easy way for visitors to investigate the new products and services on offer. Also, there is a fantastic new app that visitors can use to build an agenda that suits them and their needs.
The leading associations will be participating in the exhibition, including the British Safety Industry Federation, which will be hosting a product innovation village. RoSPA will host its awards ceremony on 17 June and of course, IOSH, which will, as ever have a huge presence within the event itself. BOHS is delivering the occupational hygiene theatre, looking at many topics including skin cancer in construction.
A key educational feature will be the SHP legal and cultural arena – a forum dedicated to safety culture and legal issues, hosted by some of the country’s top lawyers including Simon Toseland, Workplace Law and Kevin Bridges, Pinsent Masons. They will be looking at key issues such as how to handle regulators, doing HSE interviews under caution and employee engagement.
Another vibrant feature planned for the exhibition is Safety and Health LIVE. This involves 25-minute live showcase slots demonstrating equipment and PPE with lights, music and fabulous models! This will run across the three-day event.
Other areas include the working at height knowledge base, which will provide practical and engaging demonstrations centered on advancing safety, best practice and competency when working at height. IKAR are also running a Fall Arrest and Rescue demonstration zone.
LiftEx 2014, which is the UK’s only exhibition dedicated to lifting equipment, will be co-locating with the Safety & Health Expo. It will feature companies such as Crosby Group and Checkmate.
For the first time, the IOSH 2014 conference will be held at the show, which means an even high level of attendee will be present in June. The two-day conference, with 36 conference sessions and a dedicated programme of practical workshops running alongside, will offer strategic global insights, influential case studies and best practice guidance to implement in the workplace. The conference agenda follows three tracks: The impact of leadership and culture in rapidly changing environments, global risk management to take your business forward and beyond compliance – regulatory and legal requirements to improve performance.
It will draw speakers from around the world including industry guru Dominic Copper, the larger than life Sidney Dekker, the eminent leadership professor from Griffith University, Lord Richard Dannett, former Chief of the British Army and Judith Hackett, Head of the Health and Safety Executive.
In total, more than 70 leading industry specialists will address the conference with representatives from government, transport, healthcare, energy, law, construction, insurance, shipping, urban regeneration, defence, manufacturing and psychology as well as social scientists presenting at the event.
Some of the most popular sessions to date include Steve Hails, director of health and safety, Crossrail, who will be talking about effective leadership across a widespread workforce. Also, the mock trial by Kevin McLouglin, barrister, Temple Garden Chambers, is proving incredibly popular. He will cover a compensation claim for physiological injury arising from stress and bullying in the workplace. Another popular session will be by Thierry Dumortier, Enhesa, who will be presenting on incorporating increasing regulation into risk management in the global workplace.
In addition to the three main conference tracks, this year the conference will be providing an additional track of CoreSkills+ workshops, which will deal with practical and technical solutions to health and safety issues. The sessions cover occupational health, leadership, working at height, safety management, business problems created by compliance and legal and regulatory workshops. There are 24 workshops in total so visitors can easily create a programme that is perfect for their needs.
Cutting the number of people killed and injured in falls from height at work will be a focus this year. With falls from height still the biggest cause of deaths in the workplace, the CoreSkills+ track will feature sessions on factors critical to tackling the problem, including the hiring of tower equipment and the use of ladders. Don Aers, technical director at PASMA (Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturer’s Association), will lead a session call ‘Working at Height – which bits are you missing?’
