The Engineering Council joins UKAS as members
Published: 08 August, 2024
The Engineering Council has announced it has successfully been voted in to join the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), becoming the 24th member of the Government-appointed body.
Membership of UKAS will enable further collaboration to increase and assure appropriate standards of competence across engineering sectors and industries. A closer relationship between the Engineering Council and UKAS will also enable approaches to competence that are more streamlined and systemic.
Engineering Council CEO, Paul Bailey, said: "I am very pleased that the Engineering Council has been accepted into the UKAS membership which I feel is another example of the strong relationship between the two organisations. Our membership provides an opportunity for the Engineering Council to support UKAS in the delivery of their strategic priorities and is a testament to our commitment to upholding the highest standards of engineering professionalism and quality.”
UKAS is a company limited by guarantee and therefore has guarantor members as part of its governance rather than shareholders. Member organisations are carefully chosen to give a balance of representation from government, business organisations, professional institutions and customer groups, all with an interest in quality and accreditation as a means of ensuring and driving confidence and performance in the market.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) was also accepted as a member on the same day, joining other UK Government departments such as the Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. A full list of members can be found on the UKAS website.
UKAS CEO, Matt Gantley, commented: “I am delighted to welcome both the Engineering Council and MHCLG as the latest UKAS members. Their participation will certainly enhance our work with the engineering profession and our support to public policy in the built environment sector. We value the collaboration with all our UKAS members, which helps to build assurance in the UK market, promoting public trust and confidence.”
