Royal Academy of Engineering launches National Engineering Day

Published:  13 October, 2022

The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) has launched National Engineering Day – a celebration of great British engineering that aims to make the profession more visible, and showcase how engineers are shaping the world around us. In 2022, National Engineering Day will be held on November 2, and the Academy is calling on the engineering community to get involved with the event.

This year’s National Engineering Day will focus on how engineers are improving lives – from the small enhancements that make our everyday lives better, to the ground-breaking innovations that are helping us tackle the biggest issues facing the world today.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to get involved on November 2 - using the hashtag #NationalEngineeringDay - by sharing a social post, a video or a case study highlighting how they are improving lives.

There will be more opportunities for businesses to get involved too. The Academy has produced a community toolkit outlining all the ways companies can participate in the celebration. To receive the toolkit or for information on how to get involved on National Engineering Day, companies can email: nationalengineeringday@aprilsix.com

The Academy will be releasing research, showcasing case studies and linking up with some surprise guests on National Engineering Day. Keep an eye on the Academy’s social media handles (LinkedIn: Royal Academy of Engineering; Twitter: @ThisEng; Instagram: @ThisisEngineering;) for more information.

Dr. Hayaatun Sillem CBE, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, comments: “As world leaders prepare to gather at COP27, November 2022 marks a perfect point for us all to reflect on the skills needed to tackle the problems we face right now and how we can build a better future together.

“This country has a rich engineering heritage, but we need more engineers from all backgrounds to tackle shared societal challenges such as climate change as well as meeting the needs of the UK economy. On National Engineering Day, we encourage our community to showcase their own ground-breaking work, celebrate the engineers who improve our lives, and help us inspire the future engineers needed to create change.”

National Engineering Day has evolved from the This is Engineering campaign which was launched by the Academy in 2018. The campaign focuses on changing perceptions about engineering and encouraging young people to take up careers in the profession. National Engineering Day aims to expand this reach further, by not only inspiring young people into the profession, but also raising awareness within the general public of the vital work engineers do and providing an opportunity for the engineering community to celebrate the profession.
