Boiler installation provides steam for bespoke volume corrugator

Published:  09 February, 2017

As part of a £11m investment in its Preston plant, corrugated sheet board manufacturer Board24 has installed a Babcock Wanson BWD60 fire tube boiler, which is being used to provide steam for a new bespoke volume corrugator.

Previously, Board24 was toiling at peak times to satisfy customer demand. In 2014 a decision was made to spend £7.6m on a new corrugator plant in Preston, which became operational in November 2015. The site was further extended costing an additional £3.5m. With the site and new equipment - including the BWD60 fire tube boiler - up and running, Board24 has now doubled its capacity. This major investment was recently recognised at the UK Packaging Awards 2016 where Board24 was Highly Commended in the Investment Project of the Year category.

The BWD Series of Fire Tube Boilers from Babcock Wanson are highly efficient as a result of the optimised matching of the boiler shell and the burner, along with advanced burner head geometry which provides stable combustion with near constant efficiency throughout the complete burner modulating range. The BWD Boiler is designed for long life and, with easy accessibility of the tubes, lower cost maintenance. They have a wide operating range with turn down ratios up to 8:1 when firing on gas, as is the case at Board24, and come with a variety of operating modes for fully manned, supervised or unattended operation.

The BWD60 was supplied by Babcock Wanson Espania and commissioned by Babcock Wanson UK, which is also providing a service contract consisting of one full and one burner service per year.

Lee Bullen, corrugated services manager at Board24, is pleased with the outcome: “It’s running very well, both easy to use and efficient. The service from Babcock Wanson has also been very good.”

Babcock Wanson offers a complete range of products and services for boiler houses and other process heating needs, from steam boilers, thermal fluid heaters, rapid steam generators, process air heaters and hot water boilers to VOC and odour treatment by thermal oxidation, water treatment or process air heating solutions. The company aims to help optimise customer’s energy production with high quality products and efficient service.
