MID-Certified energy meter

Published:  19 October, 2007

Carlo Gavazzi has introduced a new range of energy meters in compact housings.  The first model within the range - EM24 – is claimed by the manufacturer to be the smallest and most powerful MID-Certified instrument on the market that allows a three-phase direct connection up to 65A.  EM24 provides complete utility metering for load analysis, offering conventional three-phase active and reactive energy measurements, together with gas, hot and cold water and remote heating consumption. The meter conforms to the newly introduced Measuring Instruments Directive (MID), it also meets the latest Accuracy Class 1 European standards EN62053-21 and EN50470-3 (Class B,) it has a tamper proof terminal cover to protect all inputs/outputs for when being used for revenue or billing purposes.

For applications such as public buildings and industrial premises, the new analyser allows cost allocation, cost splitting and variable control, thanks to its two digital outputs and RS485 communication port. These technical features provide a quick and easy data transmission to PC/PLC alarm, monitoring and control systems.

Housed in a compact 90 x 71 x 65mm (4 DIN) standalone module, the unit has a large LCD display which uses STN technology to ensure sharp readability over a wide angle. The front panel incorporates a joystick to quickly scroll through the readout, and uses a programmable four-position rotary selector to switch between alternative measurement pages.

As well as tamper-proof facilities and password protection, a physical seal gives access to the meter's application-oriented programming structure, which enables programmers to quickly set up the meter by choosing between eight pre-set programmes: basic, advanced, multi domestic, shopping centres, solar energy and light industrial applications.

The EM24 is designed to be DIN rail mounted, and as it is only 4 DIN modules
wide, it is ideal for sub metering applications where multiple meters need to be
installed.  With the use of a 96 x 96 panel mount adapter kit this meter can also be
retro fitted to existing panels where old sub meters need to be removed and replaced
with new MID certified meters for billing applications. The EM-24 provides the installer
with time and cost savings, and features an application-oriented programming mode and connection system to simplify installation.

Instead of installing the EM24 as a standalone meter, it can be panel-mounted on DIN rail using an optional adapter kit. Installation is further simplified by its use of a self-power supply and automatic phase detection.

Three inputs provide the ability to measure all energy variables, and these can be extended by using total/partial or total/multi-tariff metering. Measurements are precise, accurate and reliable, with  8 +7½ digit resolution for energy measurement, EN62053-21 (Class 1) for active energy (kWh), under the MID this meter is accuracy Class B and temperature drift is less than 200ppm/° C.

Future additions to the new energy meter family will include an ultra-compact single-phase model and a top-of-the range energy analyser.
